Strategic Assessments seeks to bridge the gap between conflict management – as embodied in humanitarian assistance, development work and peace operations – and conflict resolution, which demands a greater investment of political will. Toward that end, Strategic Assessments runs innovative programs that link on-the-ground practicalities with the broader political concerns of the major stakeholders. By tying together the practical and the political, the theoretical and the real, and the scholarly and the applied, Strategic Assessments fills a neglected niche in the policy world.

Halting Palestinian Funds
An interview with SAI President, Amjad Atallah, on The NewsHour with Jim Lehrer

Strategic Assessments’ Scenario Planning Program, working in partnership with the Public International Law and Policy Group (PILPG), is working to identify a base-line of international law for a host of issues related to independence, freedom, and equality; identifying the range of practice by new and established states to address these issues; and applies them to conflict situations to assist stakeholders in identifying often novel solutions to entrenched problems.

Peacr, Culture, Media
Strategic Assessments’ Peace, Culture & Media Program introduces conflict resolution themes and legal and policy analysis to a wide range of stakeholders who have influence over public perceptions of conflict.  Strategic Assessments is currently engaged on two issues in particular – the continuing genocide in Darfur Sudan and the continued Israeli occupation of Palestinian and Syrian territory.  On the Israeli occupation, Strategic Assessments has launched Fair Play Media under the direction of Nadia Saah.

Near East & Africa Security Framework (NEASFram)
Strategic Assessments has launched a Near East and Africa Security Framework Program (NEASFram) to apply a coordinated approach to addressing the human and national security concerns created by conflict in the arc from Asia through Africa and including the Middle East. NeasFram intends to provide legal and policy formulations for a new United States’ foreign policy that is consistent with U.S. national security interests and international law and that recognizes the inter-relatedness of the host of conflicts with which the United States is involved.

Stabilization
Strategic Assessments also works on the ground in conflict settings when appropriate to build capacity for conflict resolution and to help stabilize conditions. In 2004 and 2005, Strategic Assessments, under the direction of Dr. Jarat Chopra of Brown University, launched the International Transition Assistance Group to act as a private multinational third party in the context of Israel’s occupation of the West Bank and the Gaza Strip, in cooperation with efforts by the international community.
